| All the NC missionaries arrived! |
Sister Jord is officially a North Carolineian (sp). All of her emails seem to come with "Y'all" in the title. And we finally got some pictures. YAY! It is so good to see her smiling face and know she is doing well! From the sounds of things, she is being very well taken care of and loving it!
The missionaries were picked up at the airport by their mission president and wife, the Thomas's. Jord's description of them was "wonderful and tall". Looking at the picture with them and Jord, you can definitely tell. President Thomas told them he wanted to see their faces when they landed and "tasted the humidity"! They took them back to the mission home where they were welcomed with a meal of hamburgers, corn on the cob, and a southern specialty, banana pudding. Jord said it was awesome! The next day they drove to Statesville and of course, for any of you that know Jord, she got car sick on the journey there, poor thing she gets that from me...ha ha. She met her new companion, Sister Flynn. She is from Gilbert Arizona and has been out nine months. Jord really likes her.
Their first area is in Dobson, NC. She said it is very country, but beautiful. Jord likens it to a quaint Preston, ID. It is extremely hot and she says she sweats from every pore, likening her neck to a "slip n slide", and has since acquired a nice farmers' tan. Grampy can relate to that very well! There are fields and trees everywhere. The fields are full of corn and tobacco. One of Jord's favorite new experiences are the fireflies. They come out at night and blink all over the landscape. She loves the Disney movie, "The Princess and the Frog", and says that is what it reminds her of. She refers to their living quarters as a "Shanty", or "man cave" is what the Elders call it. One of the rooms in their house is yellow with black paint dripping down it, so it looks like blood...awesome news for a mom to hear...NOT! Luckily, Brother Bartley is painting it for them. I'll have to remember to thank him someday :O) She and her companion are the first Sister Missionaries to come to Dobson. They call it whitewashing the area...okay?
Tracting for Jord is a little scary, which I can only imagine and try not to think about, because you never know who is going to answer the door, but Jord says the southern hospitality "we" hear about is real, and they have met some very nice people that are always willing to listen. Everyone, according to Jord, is Baptist. Only one LDS church has been spotted so far, with the rest being Baptist. They have even been approached and preached to by preachers in the area. Jord and her companion prayed to find those that were seeking the truth and this is what she had to say about that;
"We met Kevin and Steve. In their late 20's. They said they were truth seekers and had prayed if God had truth He'd send it to them. Ta da :) We had a lesson on the Restoration and Kevin prayed at the end to know if what we taught was true. We're going back this week. We also met two black guys. Scary because this is the land of shirtless men and they had tatoos and piercings through their nipples. Yeah wow. They were so nice though. Awesome. We also met Brenda. She said yeah come in yall and she's 24. She said she had been having a really depressing day and was so happy to have someone to talk to. She wanted to pray and she gave us hugs when we left. This is the Lord's work I have come to find. We don't have to convince anyone. He prepares them. We find them. He teaches them. It's simple really."
......okay, I am crying AGAIN. Everytime I read that part, the spirit is so strong I can't help but know that what Jord is doing is right. She is in the right place at the right time, doing the right work, the Lord's. God bless her and Sister Flynn, and the sweet people in Dobson, NC that they come in contact with. Please keep her in your prayers.
